Nightime Fair #1 5"x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

At night, the fair is a TOTALLY different place than it is during the day, and if you go on a Friday night like we did, it’s even crazier. Carnies call out to you to “win” a sawdust-filled SpongeBob. Families wait in line for turkey legs (don’t get it) and Indian tacos (do get it, mmm). Adolescent boys shove each other and laugh, loping around like packs of retriever puppies. The rides are in full force, the lights are on, and everything feels hyperreal and almost otherworldly.

The Fair at night is all about action—it’s a collision of light and movement, colors and sounds, and smells and tastes. Because we are abstract painters, we tried to capture this feeling of action and this experience of being at the fair in a visceral and sensorial way. Hopefully our brushstrokes, colors, and forms evoke a sense of being at the fair as well as totally loving almost everything about it.
