Twilight Fair #2 6"x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke SOLD

This particular evening at the fair the weather was great--not nearly as hot as Oklahoma can get in September, and absolutely lovely as the sun was setting. The Ferris Wheel was off in the distance, the lights on the other rides were just coming on, and the sky was this pure, clear, penetrating blue. It was strange because the sky and the lights felt almost peaceful and calm, but all around, the fair was chock full of activity and gearing up for a busy Friday night. It was one of those weird, anomalous moments that we both talked about later and tried to capture in this work.

Twilight Fair #1 6"x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke SOLD

Welcome to Time to Make the Donutz...
Paintings Made Fresh Daily by Christina and Robin

This first set of paintings is based on photographs, images, and memories of the State Fair of Oklahoma. We both grew up going to the fair each year and absolutely LOVING it. Corn dogs. Funnel cakes. Rickety rides. Barns full of smelly animals. Interesting people. The fair is a hundred-year-old rite of passage for many Oklahomans, and we NEVER miss it.

This year, we took lots of twilight photos. We both love the peacefulness of the early evening, day shifting into night, and it was fascinating to see those beautiful azure blues juxtaposed with the bright lights and sounds of the rides on the Midway.

It was a chaotic Friday night at the fair, and hopefully our paintings reflect that.
