Stripes # 2 6" x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

Stripes don't quite have the personality of luchadors, but we're having fun with them and working with a slightly different palate than last week. The oil pastels and oil sticks are out, and we're still in love with deep, chocolate brown.

Also, as an interesting aside, stripes do not enjoy sleet, ice, snow, and a 16 degree wind chill either. However, their union is not as well-organized as the International Brotherhood of Luchadors, and so they will be here all week.

Stripes # 1 6" x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

Luchadors do not enjoy sleet, ice, snow, and a 16 degree wind chill. They are on vacation at least until March. Enjoy the stripes.

Luchador Portrait #6 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin O. Starke
$100

The black luchador specializes in headlocks and chinlocks like the Anaconda Vice and the Camel Clutch. He always fights fair, has never been “beat down,” and if you call his mama a bad name, he’ll pick you up in a Gorilla Press and toss you across the ring.

"Luchador Portrait #5" 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin O. Starke
$100
Today's Luchador is pure tough. He is all business whether in the ring or in his personal life.
He is the protector of right and is always ready to come to the aid of the less fortunate.

Luchador Portrait #4 6" x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

The second blue luchador worked his way through college and got a degree in rhetoric from UC Berkeley. He worked part-time at Cody’s books and rode his bicycle everywhere. After finishing the coursework for his PhD, he realized that he wasn’t cut out for the backbiting and political in-fighting of academia, and at the urging of his uncle, two cousins and older brother he joined the world of lucha libre. He finds that his rhetorical skills come in handy on a daily basis, and he has no problem counteracting a snide political comment with an armlock or a cobra clutch.

Luchador Portrait #3 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

Don’t be fooled by the white luchador’s overeager smile and goofy demeanor—he still knows how to take care of business at the office. Sure, now that he’s off the “supplements,” he’s put on a few pounds, and, well, his tights have seen better days, but that still doesn’t stop him from kickin’ ass first and takin’ names later.

Luchador Portrait #2 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

We love the blue luchador. He might not be as showy as the green one or as fierce as the bald, pony-tailed guy you’ll see later in the week, but he seems like a solid, dependable guy. He’ll go to the grocery store for you and not gripe about the price of mangoes or organic beef, remember to actually sort the laundry into whites and darks, and he probably puts the toilet seat down after he uses it. He doesn’t really like to talk much about his feelings, but he kicks ass in the ring. All in all a good guy.

Luchador Portrait #1 6" x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

We've decided to introduce you to the luchadors one by one with a quirky portrait series. This is green faced luchador is one of our favorites. We wanted to attempt to relate to the viewer the fun we have had and are having with these little figures. Have a GREAT weekend; we are supposed to have 8" of snow this weekend. With the week of ice and now snow, we might have to think seriously about a WHITE OUT series.

Candyland #1 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

Well, here’s our first Candyland painting…. It reminds us of the part of the board with the floating ice cream bars, but Christina never made it over to her mother’s house to search for the thirty-five year-old Candyland box that would confirm the name of the place, so here we are. Yes, this painting evokes Candyland and was created in the true, Candyland spirit, but we have no exact confirmation of its specific Candyland connection. Maybe before we go full throttle into this series, we should have the actual game in front of us. Not the modern interloper, the real, Nixon era Candyland. New Candyland blows. Anyway, with the ice storm leftovers, the snow on the way, and the fact that Christina’s mom lives up the steepest driveway on the block, it’s not looking like we’re going to find exact inspiration in the next few days. We’ll see what happens.

With a bubblegum-pink background and oversized light green “sequins” floating around, it’s safe to assume that this is a post-luchador lemon.

Lucha Landscape #6 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

This is our last Lucha Landscape for a while. We enjoyed doing them, and more than anything, we loved the fact that they were a totally unexpected part of the process. When we ripped open that sack of luchadors a couple of months ago, we had no idea that we would become so enthralled with them, much less create peculiar, goofy landscapes inspired by them. As far as what comes next, we’ve been talking and working and have a few ideas about what we want to do. We’re thinking about some valentines, some luchador portraits, maybe even an occasional “lemon” revisited, and perhaps a series inspired by our love of the game “Candyland,” circa 1973, of course. We’ll see what happens.

Lucha Landscape #5 6" x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke SOLD

Lately we’ve been using a lot of collage. It’s an additive process, and it seems to fit the way that we pass the paintings back and forth. We alternate the layers of paint and paper, and depending on the kind of paint we use and how many coats we apply, there’s a nice contrast between the opacity of the paint and the transparency of the paper.

Lucha Landscape #4 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

This “Lucha Landscape” is another example of our continuing interest in circles, ovals, ellipses, eyes, lemons, etc. Both of us have been drawn to circular shapes in our own personal work as well as our collaborative work, and so maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that we see these shapes and forms in the world, react to them, talk about them, sketch them, and finally bring them into our work.

Lucha Landscape #3 5" x 7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

We love the colors in this painting. They’re a quirky, particular sort of mix, and while we were passing the painting back and forth, each of us adding a couple of layers, we fell in love with the way that these colors looked together—they just clicked. Since we also seem to be enamored with sequins lately, and our preoccupation with the graphic depiction of eyes in Lucha Libre continues unabated, we also like the way that these absurdly goofy colors emphasize the forms and texture of the painting.

Lucha Landscpape #2 6"x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin O. Starke $100

This painting was directly inspired by the sequines on the luchadors' capes, also by the bright colors of their costumes. We made a rule when we first began this blog that we had to use up whatever paint we poured out. The green sequines are part of that practice. I had some paint left over from another project and thought that I would experiment with it on this painting that we were working on.

Lucha Landscape #1 6"x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin O. Starke $100
Today, we start a new series evolving from the Luchador paintings. The paintings we have been making have started looking like landscapes to us, so now we are setting out to paint some kooky, sometimes mysterious, bright landscapes based on the shapes and textures found
in our funny lucha libre figures.

Lucha Libre #9 6" x 8" Christina Pickard & Robin O. Starke $100

As we have been painting about the luchadors, we started seeing the paintings as types of landscapes. That led us to think about the wild pimped out cars that a well off luchador might drive, so we played around with a cartoon version of a fancy, smokin' car in this crazy mexican landscape.

Lucha Libre #8 5" x7" Christina Pickard & Robin Orbach Starke $100

We love many aspects of the luchador figures, i.e. the sequine capes, the wild patterns on their masks, the idea that a luchador, if he is winning, is never seen without his mask etc...; one of our favorite visually inspiring part of the luchador costume however, is their eyes and the patterns surrounding them with the mask. Many of the paintings in this series incorporate those patterns and shapes.
